Valentine's Day is Sunday, February 14, and beginning on Friday, Feb. 12, barbershop quartets from the Riverblenders Barbershop Chorus will be surprising women (and sometimes even men) all over the greater Fort Smith area with Singing Valentines. Four barbershop singers show up in person, serenade the lucky person with two love songs, and present her (or him) with a long stem rose and a Valentine card personalized with the sender's message.
"We love to surprise sweethearts, mothers, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, or any other special person with a surprise they'll treasure for the rest of their lives," said Bill Guffey, Riverblenders past president. "We'll show up at homes, workplaces, nursing homes, hospitals, or wherever people send us. We're available mornings, afternoons and evenings."
Guffey added that because Valentine's Day is on a Sunday this year, the Riverblenders will also be available on Friday and Saturday to deliver Singing Valentines. "The majority of our Singing Valentines customers like to surprise their sweethearts at work, so we'll have quartets standing by to go to schools and businesses on Friday if requested."
"The cost of becoming the most wonderful person in somebody's life is only $50.00 for two love songs, a long stem rose, and a personal card," Guffey said. "The Riverblenders deliver the Singing Valentines in greater Fort Smith, with a modest increase in price for more distant locations."
The Riverblenders are also doing something special for the local military this year. "Many of our members are veterans, and we want to do something to honor and recognize our military," Guffey said. "There are a number of service men and women in the 188th Tactical Fighter Group from Fort Smith currently serving in Afganistan and other military installations overseas, and we know it's a tough time to be away from family, especially during holidays. So we're working through the 188th Family Readiness Center to notify them that we will deliver free Singing Valentines to their loved ones within a 30 mile radius of Fort Smith. In addition, for those service men and women still stationed here at home, we'll deliver Singing Valentines for half price ($25.00). It's our way of thanking them for their service."

"This is our only fund-raiser of the year," Guffey said. "The Riverblenders Barbershop Chorus is a non-profit organization, and the money is used to support our educational and youth programs."
